By Javar Juarez (CUBNSC) Columbia, S.C.- The upcoming session of South Carolina’s legislative body is set to be highly contentious, marked by a sharp imbalance of power. It promises to be a session that turns heads, upends traditional norms, and unsettles the status quo like red clay stirred up in a storm.
In a devastating loss for Democrats, South Carolina's state party leadership—under Spain and Jay Parmley—failed to galvanize voters, resulting in a supermajority for Republicans in the legislature. Seasoned Democratic Senators, like Gerald Malloy, Mike Fanning, and newcomer Vernon Stephens, lost their seats. Sen. Kevin Johnson narrowly lost by a mere 700 votes. The Republican grip on the state is now firmer than ever, with what feels not merely like a red wave, but a crimson tide engulfing the Palmetto State.
Former Senator Katrina Shealy, who lost her seat to MAGA-backed Carlisle Kennedy over her stance on women’s reproductive rights, recently addressed this new political reality on Facebook. Shealy expressed her disappointment at the divisiveness and urged a realistic view of what the future holds, saying, “With too heavy a party on either side, there will be no legislating… The insane will now run the asylum, and those who are good and honest will not have the power or the will to stop them.”
South Carolina Democrats have been on a losing streak for over 20 years, but the recent electoral outcomes feel particularly bitter. The party's continued inability to connect with voters—especially with Black, Latino, and young constituents—underscores a critical disconnect. It’s not merely a loss; it’s a referendum on the party’s failing strategies, from messaging to leadership choices, which have left core communities feeling unheard.
But amid the disappointment, there is a glimmer of hope. Three leaders deeply embedded in the community—Senator Tameika Isaac Devine, incoming Senator Overture Walker, and newly elected Representative Hamilton Grant—stand ready to counter the wave with a new brand of Black excellence and executive vision. These leaders are respected figures, known for their grassroots involvement, community-building efforts, and desire to uplift South Carolina.
Rising Stars with Real Vision
Senator Overture Walker: A Life Rooted in Purpose
Overture Walker’s journey from poverty in Sumter, SC, to the South Carolina Senate is a story of resilience and public service. Raised by a mother who relied on public assistance, Walker knows firsthand the role government can play in helping families survive—and thrive. Through education and perseverance, he rose from a difficult childhood to earn a law degree and become a dedicated public defender, city attorney, and ultimately a county judge.
Walker is not interested in partisan squabbles; he wants effective governance. “I want to ensure every family and household is included in the progress and prosperity ,” he has said, underscoring his commitment to transparency and accountability. Walker’s vision of government as a means to improve lives drives his passion for public service. His commitment to fair, responsible governance promises to resonate in a state yearning for leaders with genuine concern for the people.
Senator Tameika Isaac Devine: A Champion for the Vulnerable
Tameika Isaac Devine has dedicated her life to protecting communities and advocating for the marginalized. First elected to the Columbia City Council in 2002, she became the first African-American woman elected at-large. Known for her hands-on approach, Devine has championed initiatives to prevent youth violence, increase financial literacy, and provide workforce training for the unemployed.
Her impact is felt far beyond Columbia. Recognized nationally, she has served on executive committees for the National League of Cities and the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials. Devine’s unyielding dedication to justice, safety, and empowerment has earned her a place in South Carolina’s future—a future where equity and opportunity aren’t just ideals but realities.
Representative Hamilton Grant: Financial Steward and Advocate for Growth
Hamilton Grant, a Columbia native with a business background, brings his expertise in financial strategy to the legislature. As President of Grant Business Advisors, he has helped non-profits, small businesses, and mid-sized companies find financial solutions that promote growth. Grant is passionate about economic development and quality education and aims to create strategic alliances that benefit all South Carolinians.
Grant who ran to represent House District 79, is dedicated to making his district a model of progress. He envisions an environment where residents enjoy accessible resources and where young people can stay and thrive. With his financial acumen and dedication to community growth, Grant represents a new generation of leaders poised to challenge the status quo.
A New Chapter in South Carolina Politics
The rise of Devine, Walker, and Grant offers South Carolina’s Democratic base a fresh start. They embody a blend of grassroots activism, executive strength, and a commitment to fair governance that South Carolinians desperately need. As Republicans hold supermajority power, these leaders will work not just within the legislature but with community organizations, non-profits, and local businesses to build alliances that reflect the state's diversity.
With Donald Trump’s return to the national stage and a South Carolina Statehouse ready to implement sweeping conservative agendas, Devine, Walker, and Grant’s presence signals a much-needed counterweight. Their leadership will call upon the community to participate actively in governance, from attending subcommittee meetings to rallying against decisions that could threaten South Carolina’s economy, educational standards, and public safety.
This new wave of Black leadership is a beacon of hope, showing that in the face of adversity, resilience and dedication can lead to meaningful change. Devine, Walker, and Grant are not only legislators but stewards of South Carolina’s future, each with a unique perspective that adds depth to the state’s political tapestry.
As the next legislative session approaches, South Carolinians can find solace in knowing that there are leaders in place ready to fight for a more just, equitable, and prosperous South Carolina. These leaders represent the promise of Black excellence, a bridge between grassroots movements and legislative action, and a bold step toward a future where government truly serves all its citizens.
