In a recent segment on "Roland Martin Unfiltered," host Roland Martin and Black Voters Matter Co-founder Cliff Albright exposed a brewing controversy within the Democratic Party. Elite Democrats are allegedly plotting to replace President Joe Biden, a move that could alienate Black voters and fracture the party's base.
The crux of the issue lies in the fear among some Democrats of a Black-led executive branch. The idea of Vice President Kamala Harris ascending to the presidency and Maryland Governor Wes Moore being nominated as Vice President is reportedly too much for certain factions within the party to stomach. This fear, rooted in Harris's race and gender, has led to a coordinated effort to oust Biden, despite the potential risks.
One of the most contentious points is the perceived disrespect towards Vice President Harris. Albright pointed out that any process bypassing the Vice President would likely result in a significant backlash from Black voters, particularly Black women and men, who view such a move as a grave disrespect.
Calls for Biden to Withdraw
Recently, around 20 Democrats have publicly called on President Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, with some even suggesting he should resign. However, this push has been met with resistance from Black voters and organizations like Black Voters Matter, who deem such actions as reckless and shortsighted. Albright emphasized the logistical nightmare of building a new national campaign on short notice, highlighting the impracticality of replacing Biden at this stage.
Adding to the controversy is the suggestion to disregard the primary results, particularly in a year when South Carolina, a state with a large Black electorate, played a pivotal role. The primary system was adjusted to give Black voters a more significant voice, and ignoring this would be a slap in the face to those who participated in the democratic process.
The narrative suggesting that Black voters are losing faith in President Biden is misleading and irrelevant. Those advising him to push for a Harris nomination, along with the media speculating on her chances without him, are out of touch with Black South Carolinians. This narrative is not only disconnected from the community's sentiments but also carries an anti-Black sentiment.
Martin and Albright also discussed the apparent collusion between media, wealthy donors, and celebrities in this campaign against Biden. They drew parallels to historical instances where political leaders faced backlash for supporting Black Americans, suggesting that Biden's appointment of Harris, along with other historic appointments, has fueled this coordinated effort against him.
Despite relentless negative coverage from his own party and the media, Biden's polling numbers have remained relatively stable. Martin questioned how these numbers might look if the media focused on more pressing issues, like Trump's legal troubles, rather than attacking Biden.
Speculations of Obama's Involvement
“One thing that we do have to underline here — just so viewers can follow what’s going on behind the scenes — is the Biden campaign and many Democratic officials do believe that Barack Obama is quietly working behind the scenes to orchestrate this,” Scarborough said on “Morning Joe.” This assertion highlights the deep divisions and intrigue within the party. For instance, George Clooney’s Op-ed from July 11th, 2024 in the New York Times, titled “George Clooney’s Plea to President Biden.”
Clooney’s Op-ed opens with a heartfelt endorsement of Biden, saying, "I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can." Clooney argues against the notion that the nomination is settled, pointing out the need for a reassessment in light of new information. He calls on top Democrats like Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, and Nancy Pelosi to encourage Biden to step aside.
Clooney refers to himself as a "lifelong Democrat," stating, "I make no apologies for that. I'm proud of what my party represents and what it stands for."
These revelations suggest a deep division within the Democratic Party. If true, the involvement of figures like Obama and the actions of establishment Democrats resemble the very behaviors that many Black voters resent.
The Democratic Party is at a crossroads. The machinations of its elite members could have far-reaching consequences, risking the alienation of Black voters who are a critical part of the party's base. As the situation unfolds, the party must navigate these internal conflicts carefully to avoid fracturing its support and jeopardizing its chances in the upcoming elections.
